Science
At Thorner C of E Primary School, our intent is for all children to be curious about the world around them and foster a love for developing their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through purposeful and relevant science lessons which follow the National Curriculum objectives.
We implement our science approach through a balance between scientific enquiry and knowledge, our science lessons provide children with the skills they need to be able to discover and investigate new concepts and build on their prior learning. As teachers, we understand the importance of modelling knowledge and enquiry skills to the children but also allowing time for them to explore and play which helps to lead their own learning. In EYFS, Science skills are developed through the area of learning, ‘Understanding the World’ in which teachers follow children’s interests and what they notice about the world around them and delve deeper into these topics through enquiry and key texts. We ensure all activities are accessible for all children, including those with SEND, and make any necessary adaptations to meet their needs with an appropriate level of challenge and opportunity.
The impact of our science approach is children are able to enthusiastically demonstrate their knowledge and enquiry skills and understand the importance of scientific concepts in today’s world.
Pupil Voice
I love how in the different topics we make predictions, carry out tests, figure out and learn new things.
Science is so fun!
I enjoy playing during the experiments and learning lots.
The experiments are great, we learn things we didn’t know before and I enjoy working together, with different people, to make things work.
We learn interesting facts about things people have invented years ago that we use today.
