Collective worship is central to the life of Thorner Church of England School. The head teacher leads worship every Monday. All members of staff lead worship once a week and the children also take turns to lead worship on a weekly basis.
We have a Friday Family Assembly each week where children are presented with certificates and awards. Their achievements both in and out of school are celebrated.
Reverend Andy Nicholson (the Church of England Vicar) and Reverend Dr Daniel Mwailu (the Methodist Minister) visit us monthly to lead worship. The children also attend services at St Peter’s Church at the start of each term and at special times during the year. The children in Year 6 often help to organise and lead these services.
At each act of collective worship a child from KS2 lights the candle and reads the school prayer to start our special time together. The children also change the colour of the cloth on our prayer table according to the time of the Christian Year.
|Our school prayer:
Father in heaven hear our prayer,
The Lord’s Prayer by Year 6
My Father is everywhere with me,
And your name is always Holy.
Please give us a little piece of Heaven for earth,
Please give us everything (food, drink, shelter and love)
We need to live each day.
Forgive us for all the bad things we do,
And help us to forgive those who are mean to us.
Help us not to do the things we shouldn't do,
And stop ourselves from being bad.
For you made the world
and you give us options to be kind and good.
The children in each year group learn about a different faith. The children visit different places of worship in order to give them first hand experience of the religious buildings and the communities they serve.
Here are photos of the children visiting Sinai Synagogue in Leeds.
